New York Wine Shipping Laws

New York has a fantastic climate for growing grapes. There are three main winegrowing regions in New York, each known for its own unique weather and grape varieties. These are Long Island, the Hudson Valley and the Finger Lakes region.

New York also has a long, fascinating history with its wine shipments. First New York banned shipments from out of state wineries unless the person actually went TO the winery and ordered it. Numerous efforts to change it failed.

Then In May 2005 the Supreme Court ruled that the New York wine laws were treating in-state and out-of-state wineries differently which was illegal. As a result, Governor George Pataki in July 2005 signed a law stating there could be direct wine shipments to consumers. There is a lot of paperwork for wineries to do to participate, but at least it's possible.

A ruling in 2009 even states that while New York wine shops can ship to consumers, wine shops outside of New York cannot do the same thing. This would seem to again violate the Supreme Court ruling that there needs to be equal access within a state and without a state.

Let me know if you have any fresh information about New York wine shipping laws! If you have recently had wine shipped in to you here, please let me know how smoothly the experience went. Often the laws say one thing, but FedEx and UPS say another!
