Maryland Wine Shipping Laws
Maryland may be small, but its lovely climate means that it boasts several wineries.
Unfortunately, Maryland is one of the most awful states when it comes to wine shipping. In Maryland you cannot ship wines to your home either from in state or out of state! It is in fact a FELONY to ship wines to your house. Can you imagine that receiving a nice bottle of Champagne is considered a felony act?
Wine lovers have been desperately trying to fix this situation. In 2009 they worked on HB 1262 - but of course the wholesaler market lobbied against it. The wholesalers don't want people buying wines they enjoy directly from the winery. They want people to buy the wines from them. However, those wholesalers only stock X number of wines. What happens if a person wants a wine that is not on that list? Too bad!
The 2009 bill was withdrawn. There was not enough support. If you live in Maryland, write REPEATEDLY to your representative and make sure your views are known. People should be able to order in wines that they want to drink. They should not be stuck with what local stores decide are worth selling.
From Paul in MD, in Aug 2009:
"The bills failed this year. We'll try again in 2011, or next year."
There's an entire website dedicated to fixing the laws in Maryland. Visit it here - Marylanders for Better Beer & Wine Laws - support the cause!
