Montana Wine Shipping Laws

Montana is very cold to be making wine. Does anybody know of any wineries in Montana?

Montana has one of the most bizarre wine shipping law situations I've ever seen. I don't think ANY other state in the US does it like this.

The CONSUMER of the wine - i.e. the Montana resident - has to apply to get a "connoisseur's license" before they can order wine! They have to register as a "wine connoisseur"! Then, and only then, can they get up to 12 cases in a year from a winery. They have to pay $50 for this license.

So that means any winery trying to ship into Montana has to verify that the person they are shipping to has a valid and up to date license! Many wineries (and carriers!) don't want to go through this hassle.

This definitely sounds like a situation where wine lovers should write in to their reps and lobby to get this changed.

Let me know if you have any fresh information about Montana wine shipping laws! If you have recently had wine shipped in to you here, please let me know how smoothly the experience went. Often the laws say one thing, but FedEx and UPS say another!
