Pommery Pop

The Pommery table had a crowd around it, and it wasn't just because their Champagne is well known. Nope, there was an attractive woman behind the counter with a tiny single-serving bottle of Champagne in her hand, and she was sipping out of it with a straw. This was drawing some attention and many requests for straws.

Pauline explained that this Champagne is a special blend made for the smaller format, which was "the sexiest and coolest on the market." It has less effervescence, hence the straw to add some air into it. It is currently only marketed in the 'hip areas' - New York, London, Paris, LA. It's been seen in Sex in the City (on HBO) and other such shows.

We tried some (without a straw, alas) and found it to be light and dry, bubbly and brisk. I'm not sure that I'd sip this in a nightclub through a straw myself, but it does seem to be a trend to kick up the stodgy Champagne market!

We did also try their rose while we were there, twice voted best rose by the Wall Street Journal. This was very tasty and light, very deserving of that honor.
