Boston Wine Expo 2002 - Saturday
Stonington Vineyards, a Local Favorite

Stonington Vineyards is located on the southern coast of Connecticut, and creates some delicious wines. They get quite a bit of traffic because of the nearby casino, and they're an easy day trip for New Yorkers. I swung by to see what they had in offering for this year.

We began with the 2000 Chardonnay. The coastal area of Connecticut and Massachusetts makes some delicious Chardonnays, and this was no exception. It was light, fruity and flavorful. The 99 Fume Vidal Blanc was light, fruity and a bit tart.

We asked after the Riesling and Gewurztraminer, but those are only available at the winery. They make those in small lots - only 225 cases of the Riesling and 500 cases of the Gewurztraminer.

The Seaport White is a blend of Vidal and Chardonnay, all done in Stainless Steel. This is their best seller, and is very crisp, fresh and fruity.

Their Seaport Blush is about half the sweetness of White Zinfandel, so it's great for new wine drinkers to work their way into the dryer wines. It's made with Cauyga and Vidal, again, very light and fresh, with the sweetness.

Their Cab Franc, one of my favorite local grapes, will be ready around 2003. They only have 3-5 acres of it currently. I'll have to be sure to swing by then!
