Gevrey Chambertin Burgundy Wine Tasting 2004
Max's Restaurant for Dessert
We were pretty disappointed with the main meal and decided to go out for more food and dessert at Max's Restaurant, which was nearby. They were just about to shut down their kitchen, but held it open for us. Several people got salads while others went right into the dessert menu. The restaurant is bright and cheerful, with primary colors and a big, open layout.
Of course the winos in the party decided we needed another FOUR bottles of wine for our party of 10 drinkers and 2 cocktail people.
Chambolle Musigny 1993 Ghislaine Barthod 'Les Cras' $89
This Burgundy is what I had at my other Burgundy tasting, but I had the barrel sample of the current release, vs the older 1993 vintage. This was smooth with a raspberry / tomato juicy aroma, gentle with light tannins and juicy fruits.
2000 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano $160
This fresh, bright red wine comes from the Montepulciano grape, which is primarily grown in Tuscany.
I had the pumpkin cupcake dish, which was three small pumpkin cupcakes with a powdered sugar topping and a glaze to drizzle over it. Quite tasty!
With ten people sharing the bill, I put in $70 (plus added a tip) towards the check just for that quick dessert! This is definitely not something you want to do every day. It really shows the value of tasting at home - where the wine is 1/3rd the price, and you can pour out smaller tastes so you can try more wines.
