From another thread ~ but relevant here: Young Earth/Old Earth Thread started June 05, 2006 http://www.wineintro.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=199744&page=0&fpart=1
Here's a question for you all: How old is our planet? A literal reading of scripture places it to be quite young, whereas science says it's quite old. What say you? Argyll

very old.

The principal scientific evidence states that the Earth is 4.5 to 4.6 billion years old.

'How old is our planet?'[Argyll] Very, very old.

'Read about it here: What these people don’t understand is that He built the world to make us think the earth is older than it really is. For example, a scientist may perform a carbon-dating process on an artifact. He finds that approximately 75% of the Carbon-14 has decayed by electron emission to Nitrogen-14, and infers that this artifact is approximately 10,000 years old, as the half-life of Carbon-14 appears to be 5,730 years. But what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage http://www.venganza.org '

I still can't believe that there are people that don't believe that the earth is very very old.

it's no surprise to me that people will deny any scientific evidence, or conjure up a psuedo-science to explain it. humans are a superstitious lot. While DANIEL E. WONDERLY certainly is no evolutionist and continually talks about the fallacy of evolution, he is quite adamant about the age of the earth being more than 6000 years old, based on the fossil and other geological records. Two articles I found: http://www.asa3.org/ASA/PSCF/1992/PSCF6-92Wonderly.html http://www.ibri.org/Papers/Creation_Date/CreationDate.htm
I would say that most young creationists hold this view, though I could be wrong. That's the premise of young earth creationism, that there was no death before the Fall. I've heard one young man say, and I tend to agree with him b/c it makes sense, that when God made the earth He made it mature, full-grown if you will, i.e. the trees were fully mature and able to bear fruit. Does that make sense? Is that old earth creationism? I have to admit I get really confused on that point. I've just recently heard him say this and I'm behind on my normal reading so I haven't had time to read more about it!

I can see how a belief in 'creation', based on Genesis, would go with the young earth theory (~ and of course, with a belief in prophecy, etc, as mentioned by Believer).

In a similar, but I suppose, opposite way, I see them all as having no basis in fact or logic. I don't say this to offend, I say it simply because the Bible stories & most of the beliefs that go with them, make absolutely no real sense to me.

Of course an omni-everything God could do anything, so, I suppose, in that sense it is possible, but i cannot accept it.

Well, I actually thought, when I read this and other similar comments, that everyone was entitled to their own opinion, but that it was actually impolite to say that evolution was 'stupid'.

After all, great minds have worked on this theory and considered it to be correct, so, whether correct or not, it isn't 'stupid' ~ not in my opinion.

However, I have now found proof that it's OK to say that it is stupid.

That doesn't mean that it is right or wrong, just that Dr Kent Hovind has given people 100 reasons for saying that it is 'stupid'.

This is from Wikipedia:
Quote:
'Kent E. Hovind is an American Young Earth creationist. He is most famous for creation science seminars, which aim to convince listeners to believe in biblical creation and to reject evolution. Hovind's views are criticized by the scientific community, and even some fellow Young Earth creationist (YEC) organizations like Answers In Genesis (AIG) criticize Hovind for "persistently us[ing] discredited or false arguments".
www.answersingenesis.org/docs2002/1011hovind.asp ]

Hovind is currently serving a ten-year term in Federal Correctional Institution, Edgefield in Edgefield, South Carolina, for 58 tax offenses, obstructing federal agents and related charges.[ http://www.bop.gov/iloc2/LocateInmate.jsp ]'

See I just don't think that Evolution Theory and Creationism are mutually exclusive. Even Louis Leakey, who has to be considered one of the foremost Evolutionists in the world has said:

Quote:
Nothing I've ever found has contradicted the Bible. It's people with their finite minds who misread the Bible.

This quote is from the Virginia Morell book-Ancestral Passions-in Chapter 3.

If a man raised in a missionary family, who considered becoming a missionary himself--can say they are not contradictory theories, why should we. The issue as always is those who choose to believe the Bible is an uncorrupted history of the Earth.

As I mentioned before, the Anglican priest who taught 'Scripture' at my school didn't consider them murually exclusive. I noted related threads elsewhere: http://www.wineintro.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=228086&fpart=2 Here are the particularly relevant ones: Scientific Discoveries Bring Man "Closer to God". http://www.wineintro.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=128069#Post128069 Is there a need to integrate Religion and Science? http://www.wineintro.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=121161&fpart=1 evolution and creationism need not be mutually exclusive http://www.wineintro.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=124542#Post124542 Believing Scripture but Playing by Science’s Rules http://www.wineintro.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=137191&fpart=1
