We have had our keet for 4 yrs and last night he passed away. He had not been acting right for a week or so - just sat all fluffed out and breathing real heavy. when I went to pick him last night he was weightless from losing weight and his breast bone was stuck out. We held him all evening up till he passed away it was very sad - very - This was a pet to my 12 yr daughter. My husband left us 4 yrs ago and the bird was a gift from her grandmother to help with the big "change". Now my question is should i get another one ? I don't know - It was so sad losing him I am not sure if i could do through that again. He was so smart and talked alot. I guess I need some advice. Thanks!
Wende I am sooo sorry about Tweety! Four years is a long time and by your post you were very attached. Just remember that Tweety's life was as long as it was supposed to be and these things just happen. My pet poodle died in February (my husband and I believed he died in my arms). I spent so much time dealing with the guilt and pain. But remember I believe Tweety's little spirit is still around watching and listening and she will meet you in heaven one day.
If and when you decide to get another bird it will be the right time. There is no definitive answer as to how long to wait. Some people heal by waiting a long time. I waiting about two weeks after Pierre died and my husband and I went to our local shelter and adopted the cutest (most stubborn) little dog! She has helped me heal..but she did not replace Pierre.
It sounds like your family has a lot of love to give so just take your time. When you are ready you will know.
I'm very sorry to hear about Tweety. This is always the saddest part of this forum. It sounds like your Tweety was a happy bird and had a good life with you.
I'm sure when (if) you're ready, you will make a great home for another lucky, lovable little bird. But as Sarah points out, he will never replace Tweety but will find his own place in your hearts.
I'm sure you'll know when the time's right to buy another bird or even another type of pet. Don't rush it. Perhaps just visit the pet stores and sooner or later one of them may just tug at your heart strings and you'll take it home.
My daughter lost hers to a snake many years ago and she'd had it for about five years, his partner died the same week. We didn't replace them with other birds though, even though we frequented the pet stores - she chose a kitten instead.
She now has a beautiful photo of both birds on her bedroom wall, a feather from each bird in with the photo itself.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I too lost a friend who was aged four about two months ago. We now have Charlie as SB started to pine. Charlie will never replace Dizzy as they are so different in character.
We just went through exactly the same thing. Calvin was 4 years old and had exactly the symptoms you describe before dying in my 12 year old son's hands. The whole family is feeling the loss. This was our first keet and I have been totally blown away by what an amazing pet he was. I never imagined they could be so rewarding.
I think we are going to get another keet very soon. If the next one starts getting that fluffed-up look he's going to the vet straight away.
Do you know what was wrong with Tweety? Our's seemed like some sort of respiratory infection to me. We have all had really bad colds for the past month and I suspect Calvin caught the cold and then got pneumonia.
Wende, I hope you get another keet to fill the hole in your life. It won't replace your previous bird, but it will replace what your previous bird gave you.
