I can't believe that I may have made my bird sick and it may not make it. I smoke, work at home, and had the birds in the room with me. I have an air purifier and kept the fan on pointing out of the room to keep the smoke out of the room. But I don't think it was enough. I have moved the birds into the other part of the house far away from me. I thought it was the sunflower seeds I had given her, the vet never asked if any one in the house smoked. I went here looking for information and now I don't think it was the seeds, although I would like to. I may have to give my birds away http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/topten.html
I moved ALL the birds into the dinning room, by a west exposure window (that's somethng else they weren't getting much of, sunshine)Sherbet breathing seems better already. I can still see them, but they are pretty far away and seperated by the living room. I'll just go out to them many times during the day and my husband is out there all the time and he doesn't smoke.

i guess we are treading in delicate territory, but i will ask - how much do you smoke? I know how much you love your birds, is it possible to keep them with you and then you can just go outside to smoke? or maybe you could use this as a reason to try to quit? i am not trying to be preachy - i am just trying to come up with ideas because i know you enjoy your birds' company

a lot...I'm hoping in the dining room will be a solution. We'll see how tonight goes. Even though the cages are on 6ft stands, and there is nothing near the cats can jump off onto the cages, I still worry. Yes quitting would be the real solution, but I know the likely hood of that I tried letting them sleep in the other room, but that just wasn't working, so they are in the closet where they have slept since the 1st day here.

I hope your new arrangement works - and don't be too hard on yourself - you don't know for sure why your birdie got sick - but it is a good opportunity for you to learn about the risk of smoking around birds and to make the appropriate adjustments. don't give up on quitting - you can talk to your doctor about the nicotine patch or zyban which can help, if you are determined! - either way, maybe you will be able to cut back, if not for yourself, then for your birds! I know many people who have quit smoking, and it usually is for their family and grandkids, and your animals are definitely a part of your family! let us know how things are going!

I will..I'll also try and cut down on smoking in the house, for all the animals. I tried Zyban, I was one of those people that it did nothing for. My grandson bugs me everytime he's over.Maybe I'll think aobut the patches again. They don't need a Rx anymore. I know lots who quit too, they all weigh 300 lbs now

its definitely not easy to quit - i know many more people who quit alcohol - and of the people who quit both cigarettes and alcohol, they ALL say that quitting cigarettes is harder.
But even cutting back is good for you, (and the animals) - you don't have to just quit overnight! :p And thank you for sharing all this with us - i know it is very personal - I think it is great you confided in us, and i think it is good for the younger members to see too.

well Sherbet died sometime during the night. I really don't know what was the matter with her, it could have been something she had before I got her which was only 3 weeks ago. The rest of the birds are fine. I am still going to keep them out of the room. I am not going to get Jewel another friend right away and work with taming him. I'm going to miss Sherbet she was a beautiful bird. Oh well, whats born dies.
