My school had dissection in 7th grade and we were allowed to opt out of it and write a paper instead. My teacher was so nice that when me and another girl chose not to do it she said she understood and we didn't even have to write a paper.

When I was in seventh and eight grade my science teacher had us dissect a large number of animals, I hated it. Then in high school once again we were forced to dissect animals. When my teacher pulled out a cat in a vacuum suction bag, I started crying right in front of the class. It was very embarrassing.

My son wants to be a veterinary, so he took an anatomy class. They had to disect cats.

I don't like the idea of school having you disect animals just for education, when you could learn it in a book. Now, if you were wanting to be in a medical field, I can see them having you disect an animal.

The hardest part for my son was that they had to name the cat before they started to disect it. That made it a real thing, instead of just educational.

He could actually understand what it would be like to be a vet, and operating to save an animal after taking that class.

The cat was actually for the honors science students. I was in regular science and the teacher brought it out just to show us. The regular classes had crayfish, worms, frogs, starfish, grasshoppers, and other small animals to dissect. If our class would have to dissect the cat I would have been running out of the classroom.
