I don't think this is accurate on my part but Coco was clipped last November and now has two well four longer feathers growing in on her wings. But she is molting. So maybe they stay clippped till the next molt and its not a matter of how many weeks etc. But how long till they molt again.

I am sure someone with experience can help us out.

As for the blood feather I saw one somewhere on here or the web, if you hold the wing out in the light you see a line in it like you would a vein, u don't wanna cut that. I have mine done for me.
Me+scissors+my bird= no way.

K this may be a dumb question, but I am asking anywho! The one thing I am HATING about clipped wings is how Tulip "THUMPS" into the ground when she tries to land... what is the best way to prevent this? Is it possibly because she had too many feathers clipped at Petsmart when we got her? I really need her to be clipped however because we have vaults, high hiding places and ceiling fans but I hate hearing her whack the ground. frown Any advice would be much appreciated! smile

a) have less of her feathers clipped
b) In Noubas case she never didnt have clipped wings so she never learned to fly and therefore never learned to land, I let her wings grow out a bit one time and now when she's clipped she lands more gracfully (she used to squeak on impact, sounded very uncomfortable)
c) Hold her over soemthing soft and let ehr 'fly' off your hand a few times so she gets used to not having wings after a few attempts she should be able to land bette,r if she doestn then one of the above two applies or, it isnt hurting her as much as its hurting you and she doesnt care enough to change it...
smile hope that was helpful

ummm dont get mad but i have a comment on how you cut your birds wings. do you cut them not all the way so that they still have some flight. working at vets they have taught me to cut until the feathers change direction you only cut what 3 feathers? just wondering why you do it...i kinda want my guys to have some flight but not enough that they can fly away or hide on my fan

kariva: When most people think of clipping a birds wings, they think of almost completely disabling the bird of flight. They could only fly about a foot or 2 if they tried hard. That is not only cruel in my opinon (!!opinion!!) but the bird gets so worked up trying to get anywhere, and that can be REALLY dangerous too!!!! what if the bird is on the floor, and no one sees it, and it gets stepped on?! OR if another animal comes along, and the bird can't get out of the way. I hate when birds wings are clipped too much.... =\\

MY way is to only cut a few on each side (for most keets, lime on the other hand, gets all of her flight feathers cut, and she can STILL fly laps around the room!!! I'm like, geezzz!! lol) that way they can still get away if they ever needed to, and they can fly to low places without falling almost instantly, but they can't get into really high, hard-to-reach places, and you can catch them better. =D It's all going on the birds ability of flight. =]
