I have seen TOO MANY people on this site with WAY WAY to small cages. Keets need big cages, and even if the cage you got says it for keets, and you bought it at a pet store, it is most likely not. They will sell you anything.

Here are the MINIMUM cage dimensions for cages w/ keets:


Minimum dimensions of cages:

MIN. Size for ONE - 18x18x18"
Volume=5,832" sq.

MIN. Size for TWO - 30x18x18"
Volume= 9,720" sq.

MIN. Size for THREE - 32x18x20"
Volume= 11,520" sq.

MIN. Size for FOUR - 34x18x25"
Volume= 15,300" sq.

MIN. Size for FIVE - 35x18x30"
Volume= 18,900" sq.

MIN. Size for SIX - 40x18x32"
Volume= 23,040" sq.


~~basically, get the largest cage you can afford, that is around those requirements.~~

****Also, make sure the maximum bar spacing (spacing in between the bars) is 1/2"...no more! It's a dangerous hazard for the keets if it is larger than 1/2". ****


you don't have to have the same dimensions as those, just make sure the volume inside is only above or below a little of what is required.

To find Volume: just multiply the Length x Width x Height. very easy.


Ex) 30X18X36= 19,440" sq.

Which is big enough for 5 spaciously. 6 with much outside of cage time!!


And remember people, this is their home. They need room to play and have fun. They will not be happy if they are in a little tiny cage not even big enough for 1. Please get a bigger cage for your keet(s) and if you can't afford it, maybe keets aren't for you. :-\ They need love, attention, and a big cage.

Also once your birds are trained its nice to be able to let them out to fly. You need to make sure your room is bird safe (no mirrors or windows that they can fly into sheer curtains are great lets light in but keeps the birds from getting hurt. Also careful with open doors and windows and other animals in the house. We have a room that our bird cages are in and we put a screen door on it so the cats can't get in and the birds can't get out. My husband just made a frame and put screen on it and it closes with a magnetic latch works great. Poor cats thought they get to watch the birds from the other side of the door (torture).

While my cage is bigger than "normal" parakeet cages, from reading this I've learned that it is still to small. I've been thinking of getting Alida a bigger one for Christmas but am concerned about prices. I have a friend getting married and have allready spent over $700 on plane tickets and dress. Does anyone know of a place online where I can buy a good quality cage without digging into my college fund?

Nice thread.. Looking back when I got my first keet (then added another keet) I didn't ask the cage size.. but I checked on petco, the dimensions of some of the other cages, and mine is bigger than they are..
And I looked at the requirements on this oage, and my keets definitaly have a big enough cage..

I'd just like to reccomend a cage. www.birdscomfort.com/flight_bird_cage.html . I got that site from Birdfriend and I am about to order it. Judging by volume, it is acceptable for four or five keets depending on how much time you give them out.
