Because it's true. The only real reason they haven't reinstated the draft is because there is still much too much public outrage from previous drafts--mostly Vietnam. However, to counter not reinstating the draft, our military is offering outrageous bonuses to anybody who will volunteer for the army, and even more if they're willing to deploy.. within the first 3 months after finishing their training, I think it was.

At the same time, there are people left and right who have been in, served their time, and are trying to get out. However, there is something in effect called a "stop-loss" which is essentially Uncle Sam saying "No."

You think these 15 month tours for ALL Army troops currently deployed is because people are so excited to be over there that they had to extend the time? The last I heard was that 15 month deployments will be the norm for the Army until Summer 2008. There have also been numerous statements made by authorities that deployments WILL NOT be extended beyond 15 months. On the contrary, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED LONGER THAN 15 MONTHS.

So stop and think about that for a second. Most of these soldiers have (or had) families. 15 months.. that could amount to 2 birthdays missed, two Christmases missed, your own kid not even recognizing you when you come home...

Oh, and what I'd really like to know is why the tax cuts Bush offered in his first term have not been repealed. If anything, taxes should be raised beyond what they were before the cuts to help finance his war.

It has been brought to my attention that these comments have taken the conversation from a general level to a more personal level, which has been considered offensive.

I'm not going to get into the argument about who is responsible for more deaths, or whether Bush should be considered a war criminal, but I don't really think that it's fair to equate someone who has voted for the current president of the USA with a supporter of Charles Manson.

And I'm sure that many people would be angry & distressed if the draft returned.

But this is a 'politics' forum where we discuss and debate political ideas.

Kiwibird2 put forward a subject for discussion.

I don't think that there is any need to be annoyed with her.

Perhaps it could have been put forward in a different way, which might have resulted in more positive reactions, but the subject was still worth discussing.

wow.. when i read the first post.. i was gonna have an outburst.. but good going guys.. its good everyone finally understood that hipocrite bush.. i even hated his father.. (i wasnt old enough, but my parents wont stop talking about it)

and bush knew from the beginning that iraq didnt bomb 9/11.. he just wants iraq's oil.. its so obvious. what would happen if he did get iraq? all that oil? btw, thats wat i think.. bush should go to jail.. lol =)
