The shared side of religion ?

Religion is something that allows an otherwise perfect and logical person to committ horrible (often genocidal) crime against people of their faith with differing views and to other faiths.

They become flesh and blood, with feelings and families, and hopes and dreams just like yourself. It makes it much harder to perpetrate violence and indifference on someone you can associate with. Sometimes, tradgedy occurs simply because we have no compassion for someone living elsewhere in the world. Indifference prevails and suffering continues because we simply have never connected on a personal level. Tragedy is something that happens on the news, but it sometimes begins in our hearts.

I have just posted something very similar on another thread. \:\)

Yes, sadly it can do that, as others have intimated, but it shouldn't have to.

If everyone accepted that the universe is a wonderful place which may ~ or may not ~ have a supreme intelligece or power behind it, and that some people wished to worship that as 'God', in their own way, according to their own culture, there should be no problem.

Buddhism seems to be a very peaceful religion. Hindusim seems very accepting & peaceful. The Scriptures of both Christian & Jew, say 'thou shalt not murder'. I haven't read the Quran, but I have seen excerpts which promote peace.

Unfortunately, there are also religious writings that promote slaughter. I have seen them in the Old Testament, for example.

In this day and age, with all the knowledge and education of the 21st century available, when we know that we are all closely related and that we have to share a world that seems to be ever-diminshing in size, there must surely be a way of accepting each other's creeds peacefully.

The thing is, though, it's not just about religion, it's also about politics, economics, power, ethnic differences, cultural differences, lack of education, lack of understanding, etc, etc.

Your picture is indeed great. I have the same feeling, when I realise what little I know and the vast ocean of knowledge that is ahead . . .

I have accumulated a few sand dusts so far . . .
