Hi, I kinda should have known this would happen but Yoko has now laid 2 eggs in her new "nest" that she made.

She and Bowie (the male) don't get along very well, she tries to mate with me and he'll try to mate with a toy.

[img][/img]

So I'm quite sure that the eggs are not fertile but how can I be a 100% sure?
Also the "nest" is outside the cage, so I guess I'll have to allow her to sleep outside the cage so she can be with her eggs. Is that right or can I still put her in the cage at night?

Help and advice is greatly appreachiated. eek

Oh no! I don't know much about this but I'm thinking that maybe you could transfer her and her eggs back to her cage, if you're sure they're not fertile. Also some bird supply places sell fake eggs you can substitute in, when she's not looking, so that you don't end up with, um, a disgusting mess after a few days (the eggs will begin decomposing soon).

If they are fertile, then you have an entirely different situation, which you can research in the "breeding" section of the forum. Also of course you should probably leave her there with the eggs, but maybe you can transfer them? I don't know...

Who was it had the birdie laying eggs in the cozy hut? Seems to me they were advised to get a breeding box and move the eggs ASAP. Not sure though. I have also heard many say to replace the eggs with a white marble. The mommy won't go through withdrawals and keep laying eggs because hers has disappeared but will soon realize they are not fertile and will abandon the eggs.

They also said to handle the eggs carefully as they are porous and your skin oils can kill the baby (if you decide you want to raise them that is.)

Yes, this is a very odd situation ... if I were you, I'd just make sure that the room she is in is 200% parakeet proof. What esactly is she making her nest in? Does it somewhat represent a nesting box? If so, then I see no harm in leaving her there. But if the eggs do indeed hatch, you need to be sure that there are plenty of perches, or atleast places to land, because when the babies come out of the nesting box, they need something to perch on. You don't want the to fall to the ground. eek

Good luck! smile

Since you are not prepared for this, call around to pet stores around you and pick up some fake keet eggs. If no store has them, you can get them online.

After you have them, you will switch the real egg with the fake one, but only one a day to switch.

Monitor her, and keep her nutrition up with fruits and vegis.

You should take the egg and put it inside the cage, as she is not safe outside the cage for long periods of time. When she is out, keep an eye on her and if she looks like she wants to lay an egg, put her inside the cage, or let her lay it and transfer it to the cage and switch it with the fake one.

She will tire after a while and stop laying.

Thanks all.

Yes those are magazine holders that she decided to nest in! I know I should have stopped her in some way when she started to "build it".

Anyway, there are two eggs now! And I can't get her into the cage - not even at night.

I am 99,5% sure that they are not fertile since she and the male kinda seem to hate each other - or rather she seems to hate him.

Could you give me a link to where I can buy fake eggs? They don't seem to have them over here.

How long will it take until the eggs turn bad? I really don't care for maggots in my bookshelf!

I have also seen others post about using white marbles.

Here is the first site I found that sells fake eggs though:
