I know that my kids think that I am over the top, but roads are very busy, with huge trucks, fast cars & some thoughtless & incompetent drivers. Bikes are small, with no protection for the rider.

If you are going to ride your bike ~ especially long distances on busy roads ~ be very, very careful. I hope that you have a good quality protective helmet.

When I was in HS, a long time ago, my friends and I would ride at least 10-15 miles daily and 50-100 miles on weekends but it was in an area without a ton of traffic and relatively flat.

But what happens when he gets to his gf, pdm, wearing a helmet, and she brakes up with him?

Totally bike. I bike in traffic and nearly die every other die. The fact that you might die any second makes life worth living!

I am the one NO - it is not a 20 mile bike ride, it is a 40 mile bike ride. Are you going to stay a while, or just a visit and turn around and come back, in the dark. Do you have phones, email, IM??? Give some reason that you should do this.

There is much to be said in favour of cycling, but risking one's life ~ or saying that you do ~ in order to 'make life worth living' is immature and irresponsible.

There may be no life to live if one takes stupid risks.

When you are older, and maybe have children of your own, you may understand why more mature people think as they do.

How long would it take to cycle to her place?
How safe are the roads ~ are there cycle tracks?
Would you be riding home in the dark?
Do you have a cycle helmet?
Is there a midway point you could both reach easily?
Is there public transport?
Could parents help out with lifts?

Enough age to know better, and to know this is not as important at the rider thinks it is at this point in his life.

That is why parents get to be in charge until 18.

That's kind of what I thought.

well even if i wanted too ride to her house i cannot. the roads are not safe at all. and if i were to ride there my gf would be so mad at me for putting myself in danger. i did get to see her today and that made me so incredibly happy!!!
