After getting a luxurious 7 hours of sleep, I came back to see how this topic is doing. I enjoy intelligent conversation, but I also enjoy intelligent humor/humour.
But seeing an edit by PDM on the previous post reminds me of the point (in space, time, dimension, ???) of this topic.
Since the topic was started in the religious research section, it should be okay to wonder if this "big bang" experiment might be akin to the "tower of babel" experiment talked about in the Bible.
Are there things that we are not meant to know or discover? We cringe over cloning. We wonder if it is sacrilegious to investigate or to try to re-create "life." We get in heated debates over whether we should do stem cell research. It goes on and on.
By the way, for those of you who are less familiar with me, my asking these questions, or drawing the parallels does not indicate what I think about any of these topics.
But you may be right to worry, PDM. In school chemistry labs, boys delight in making the smelly stuff. But when the experiment involves a "bang," are we really ready for it?

when i was in chemistry i was doing stuff the public should have been worried about, and that was just in a 2 bit chemical company.
theologically speaking, i don't think there is any such thing as forbidden knowledge in the universal sense. why would something exist in our sphere that we're not allowed to learn about? i think forbidden knowledge is a purely human concept, designed to keep the masses ignorant and the clergy or government in power. i don't see how god would have any need of exclusion zones, state secrets, gagging orders and talk of heresy and national security.
there are those, be they clergy or rulers, who would have us believe that certain truths have to kept from us for our own protection, but as far as i can see the only dangerous knowledge is that which you do not have.
maybe i got the wrong end of the stick, but i never saw the tower of bable as being about forbidden knowledge as such. i also thought the human arrogance angle was a bit banal and simplistic. i think what the story is saying is that you cannot build a bridge into the transcendental by any physical means. the only way to connect is through your mind, your soul. physical means cannot bring you closer to god, be they towers, bridges spaceships or money. kinda like an alternate angle on the camel and eye of a needle story.

Before PDM reminds us about getting off topic (if we are), let me say, Jan, that I tend to agree with you. That is, I think we are not "forbidden" to seek knowledge. Fact is, it is in our natures, I think, to seek. Some are very cautious, and some are very foolhardy, and there are people in between (and also people completely off the scale).
Nonetheless, it is conceivable that sought knowledge can cause harm before it is understood enough to avoid.
