Today when my mom went to give our keets food we noticed that there were little worms in the food. I know most birds eat worms but we dont want to give any of this to our birds not knowing if it will harm them in any way. We put that seed aside and gave them somethin else. Can anyone tell me if it would harm them if they happen to eat the food that had/has the worms in it?

i would suggest dumping and starting fresh freeze the new seed for at least 4 hours then put in air tight container

yes i would suggest storing seed in a sealed container in the fridge.

also ... be sure they did not eat it, if you think they did you may want to get a vet check up as the worms could take up residence in the crop or stomach.

I keep my seeds and pellets in the freezer all the time (Is that ok?)

the fridge is better.

the seeds have oils in them, whcih when frozen then un frozen cause moisture to form.

same with coffee keeping in the freezer actually causes it to spoil faster and grow mold

the fridge keeps it cool without adding moisture the veggie krisper drawyer works great

I read somewhere to freeze the seed as this kills the moths. I do freeze first then I put in air tight containers and store in the fridge.

This happened to me a week ago...Stupid moths, I bought them fresh new seed and made sure that there is no way a moth can get in there and lay there stupid little eggs! lol I mean plz if we won't eat worms why should our feather babies?

I don't know if I would keep the seeds at all,I would call my avian vet and see what he recommends.

i'm vermiphobic--if this were to happen to me, it is highly possible that i would never be able to touch bird seed again, not even to feed chi-chi and nene (i'm incredibly serious--my phobia is that bad) i did not know this could happen! omg! i happened to be glancing at the posts and i saw this, and i nearly fell off my bed! omg--how do you keep this from happening?!

Lora -- my sense is that this is fairly rare. The older bird books talk about preventing moths, but I suspect that the smaller packages most of us buy nowadays are less susceptible to bugs...

Pretty Bird -- I too have heard of freezing the seeds to kill any bugs... Helwa's point about mold is well-taken, though...

My guess would be to buy seeds from a brand (and store) that is popular, so there's frequent restocking (and shipments) of the product.
