This is an excellent idea.My flock is under the care of Avian vets.I recommend them highly. They removed a tumor from my tiel smokey. The cost was almost a $1,000.Smokey is doing great;it was almost two years ago. They are named The Center For Avian and Exotic Medcine; located at 568 Columbus Avenue,N.Y,N.Y.in between 87 and 88 street.telephone #1-212-501-8750.Not only do they provide great care but you'll get chances to see show birds and everyone is happy to answer questions.

Great idea!

Our avian vet was fabulous but left the practice she had been with (in Illinois) and I can't find which practice she joined, in Indiana. I heard she may not be allowed to take on avian patients at the new place, but she's doing volunteer work at a bird rescue shelter.

When I find her I'll post more; her name is Dr. Kristen Kristek.

How do I know she's "fabulous?" One of the issues discussed in the thread that PDM posted, above, is the question of how you assess a vet, so I hope this will help: she seemed genuinely interested in Pudgie; asked me lots of questions about Pudgie's nutrition, sleep amounts, activities, age; spent time observing Pudgie in her travel cage prior to examining her; explained the basic steps of an examination before performing it; and answered my questions (a rather long list).

She struck me as a reasonably "warm" person whose primary focus was the bird (as opposed to chit-chat about the weather or what-have-you), which I thought was very professional and appropriate.

My Vet is also fabulous! Except of course they don't see birds. I've been going to these people for 30 years. They are totally about the animal. If I am short of funds at the time, They gladly put it on account. There's 2 vets and a vet tech. They DO help me figure things out for my birds problems. I would never go anyplace else.

I just located an avian vet for one of my parakeets and couldn't be happier with him!

His name is J. Peter Hill, DVM and runs the PetCare Animal Hospital in Blue Ash (Cincinnati), Ohio at 8610 Blue Ash Road, Cincinnati, OH 45242; phone number is (513) 793-3032.

I could only find one avian vet (who will remain nameless) in the area through searches until I contacted a local rescue group called Raptor for suggestions. They had Dr. Hill's name on their board of directors, so I gave him a call. The other vet was extremely expensive and they were quite rude on the phone.

One of my parakeets had a large tumor (I thought) on his belly and I wasn't sure there would be any hope for him, but Dr. Hill performed surgery and he is 3 days post surgery and doing well. He has a huge incision, but has more energy, appetite and looks better than he has in quite awhile. The exam, surgery, two nights in the hospital, meds and new diet supplement added up to less than $220, which I thought was very reasonable.

It turns out that it wasn't a tumor, but rather was something left over from hatching, perhaps yolk that was left on his belly and then became abcessed. I can't say enough good things about PetCare and Dr. Hill. I am switching vets to his practice for my cats, as well, since he and his staff are so concerned about the animals they treat, and seem far more intereted in helping than making money.

I highly recommend him. He's also the vet for the Newport Aquarium, and he handles exotics, so his practice area is wide.

I use Dr Vicki Marsh at Animal Kingdom Vet Hospital at Copperleaf Crossing just south of Ann Arbor, she is an avian vet with many years of experience and has lovebirds as pets. Her husband does educational programs and they also do some wildlife rehab work. They are open 7 days a week and fairly reasonable. http://www.copperleafcrossing.com/

That's just wonderful! And I am amazed that all that was only $220!

Our new avian vet is Dr. Katy Parr in Glenwood, Illinois http://www.gvph.com/index.html . I think she's great --- very thoughtful (in the sense of considerate but also in the sense of thinking through all possible causes of Raina's tummy troubles), and very willing to answer a zillion questions.

I thought the price was great, too. In fact, when I started asking him questions about meds for my cats he GAVE me enough dewormer for nine cats, as well as a discount on other items! My other vet would never give a discount or free anything. That's why I'm switching to him for everything. They gave me a tour of the facility & it was spotless. He also offers low-cost vaccine clinics on Saturdays. Seems like a very caring vet.

I'm lucky to have a Board-certified avian vet just across the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles) from where I live.

Amy Worell has been the vet for Littlebit, Chatterbox, and Tiki and will be seeing Buddy and Chance for the first time (well bird checkup) next week. She also has an aviary where she breeds larger birds.

Although I've never had to use it, she puts her beeper number on her business cards in case of an after-hours emergency, because she knows when a bird is injured or sick, you really can't afford to wait until the office opens in the morning.

Dr. Worell advised me on Monday that she is retiring and has sold her practice, but that the new owner is not trained in avian medicine.

I am very sorry to see her go as she has been wonderful over the years for my little guys.

She has recommended Dr. Yoko Tamura, who spent four years at All Pets before acquiring Capri Plaza Pet Clinic in Tarzana. I will report on Dr. Tamura when the opportunity arises for me to take any of my little flock to her.

I do have a user recommended vet listing here which can get reviews associated with them -

http://www.lisashea.com/petinfo/vets/

I'll make a note to copy these reviews into that listing so it's more complete.
