Hi everyone! I bought my parakeet about 3 weeks ago & was told that she's about 6 months old. I came home from work today & I immediately noticed that Pebbles (my bird) kept sneezing & would open her beak in a yawning motion & continue to sneeze. Her appearance seems the same. The climate has changed drastically, could that be the reason why she is acting this way? Another thing I am concerned about is that when I put my hand in her cage to change her food, she immediately tried to bite me! She rarely does that. Any advice on whats going on or how I can get her to stop trying to bite me?? THANKS!! -Newbie

Hi Pebbles and welcome to the forum.

As far as the biting, is this something new and if you pulled your hand back the first time she did it she now knows that she can get your hand out of her cage by biting it.

What you will need to do is just grin and bare it. Once she knows that you are not going to remove your had because she bits it she will quit. You will, at least for the first time, just wait until she lets go. Good luck with that, it can really hurt.

We would love to see pictures.

Is birdie sneezing stuff out of it's nose? Or maybe it's dusty where her cage is located?

Continual sneezing would definitely have me taking the keet into a vet to get it checked out. I can't think of any kind of massive "flower pollen dump" that would happen in November to cause that kind of problem. Or when you say "The climate has changed drastically" do you mean like you moved next to a flour processing plant?

Sometimes my bird sneezes, but not a lot. If your lovely little friend is sneezing constantly, then take her to a vet. If the climate is cold, then get a heating pad from Wal-Mart. ($12-15) If the climate is still warm and stuff like that, then maybe there is a draught where the cage is. Parakeets don't like draughts! It is winter time where I live, so I keep my bird (Jazz) partially covered with his blanket that I cover his cage with at night. Can't be too careful! :] Good luck!

P.S. About the biting...just endure it. She will quit. :]
