We have two female parakeets in the cage currently (We had three, but one of them died in the last few weeks)
Recently, one of them has been acting very strange. For a while she acts like she normally does... but suddenly something comes over her and she falls to the bottom of the cage screeching and curled up in awkward positions... and I could swear that she was going to die right there. But with a little coaxing she regains her strength and goes completely back to normal. Could this relate to the bird we had earlier that died? (Just a note on the other bird - we adopted it because the birds it used to live with abused it. One day we found it stiff as a board at the bottom of the cage.) I know you're probably all going to tell me... TAKE IT TO THE VET RIGHT NOW!!!! and I brought that up with my parents, but they aren't willing to pay for it. So. What should I do? Btw... we have an infared lamp on the cage and have had one on the cage pretty much all winter.

I know negotiating with parents is a very challenging thing to do. You could not pay me enough money to go back to an age when my parents controlled my life. I know how frustrating it is to have to rely on other people - with very different priorities in life - to do things you know are incredibly important.
Going to a vet is usually only $30 or so. So one question is what you can do - yourself - to care for your pets. Can you babysit? Can you shovel snow or rake lawns? Often there are things you can do that earn that money easily, so you can care for your own pets yourself.
Im not sure...That cant be good for her. It rly is a vet thing.
In the end, they do cost alot, but thats for a good reason...They went to school to become a doctor. They have knowledge and expertise that is gained through formal education.

Have you called around and tried to find cheaper vets? Or asked if they will let you pay on a sliding scale, or if they will take less money for your situation?
if the bird is constantly running into walls..dont let her out till she is MUCH BETTER why continue the cranial beating..Vets dont do sliding scales here..and they dont do time payments either cuz if a animal dies its very convenient for owners to forget the bill..and they know it..people are just not ethical and honest anymore..sad but true..around here dog/cat/bird..if you walk into a vet office avian or not your not getting out short of a bill STARTING at $125 and going upward from that. And if you will... they are all in cahoots at their rates none are lower than down the street or around the corner..so if you need one its have the money or have a dead animal they have no compassion...i dont like vets much anymore because of that..years ago it was VERY VERY different now i swear they have hearts of stone.
