Hi I had a few questions and problems I needed help with. First off, my budgies just hatched two chicks about a week ago. I separated the male from the chicks and the female due to his aggression and previous eatings of past eggs. He was attacking her and I didn't want him to harm the chicks. So I know have him in a separate cage that I still keep close by the other. Just today I noticed he must have plucked his tail feathers off because he is missing them. He seems very stressed that he has to be separated. What should I do? I was reading other forums and saw that someone who had a similar problem and was told not to return the male back with the others. Should I move the male into another room? What should I do?

Welcome to the forum.

Was he being aggressive this time. I know you do not want to chance him hurting the chicks or the hen, but right now he has a job he is supposed to be doing and he can't. This is probably the source of his stress.

If you are going to keep him separated, you should move him completely away from the hen.

You should probably take some measures to make sure your hen does not have another clutch. It takes both parents to raise the babies. This is going to make it more difficult on the hen.

Good luck.

He was being aggressive this time hence the separation. The mother seems to be raising them just fine and I have thought about returning him to the cage but still not sure if its the best idea? Like I said before he would destroy past eggs that had embryos inside. This time around before the hatching the mother hardly left the eggs alone and when she went for food the male would attack her. Should I return the male and will he help or just end up hurting the chicks? Anyone have any related or similar experiences?
