What do you recycle and reuse? Do you have any clever ideas for reusing normal household 'trash'?

What do you try to do to reduce your personal household's waste stream?

We recycle all paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, plastic.

We aren't being good about organic items. Bob and I are still discussing that.

So what do we throw away ... I suppose mostly organic items. Like hair caught in the sink drain, that sort of stuff, which could be composted.

I posted this on another thread too. Sorry for the repeat, but we are just so proud of Andrea and her accomplishments at this school! Hopefully they'll carry these lifestyles into their lives past college.

That's wonderful, it's very inspiring that the "next generation" pays attention to their environment!

I made a trip to my landfill bound transit station yesterday. I wanted to see what people threw away. It was a fascinating trip - both sad and hopeful.

I wrote about it on my blog: A trip to the dump

I also spoke with a local thrift shop owner yesterday to see what she felt about the nice items going to the dump and not her shop. I'll have to write down that experience also. And maybe I need to visit the actual landfill next.

I want to screw up my courage to talk to the county supervisor about some of my ideas, but I want to get all the facts first. Not quite there yet.

But it was still very interesting to see first hand what comprises the mountains of waste we create every day in my area.

That's a great write-up Jill! Remember you don't have to talk to them in person, you can always write up a summary and send an email. That can get the same result and be less stress!

Tomorrow I FINALLY get to bring my cans in! I will stop in at the landfill on the way and see what there is to see on that front.

We decided to stay here two more weeks so this gives me a little more breathing space to learn what I need to learn before talking to the supervisor.

I do think i would rather make a phone call than sending an email. With an email I will spend too much time on getting it perfect.

Jilly, have you thought about sending an email and referring the supervisor to your blog and requesting an appointment for a personal visit.

Hmmm. Maybe that would work. I wonder if he'd even bother to read the post, though.

You could ask him/her to please respond. If you don't get a response, stay after it. Send the email again. Find out who his/her boss is and cc that person. If you don't get some kind of response, get aggressive.
