A new year! One woman that Marge works with - her church thinks (believes, I should say) that the world will end in May of this year. I asked Marge if she will tell them at work to leave her off the schedule following that date? Seems a responsible kind of thing to do, plus demonstrates faith.

Myself, I will continue living and loving and enjoying life as I can, until it ends - whenever that may be. I guess if I enjoyed "worrying" about the end, then that would be okay, but I don't. So I won't. I worry about too many things as it is.

Interesting. When I got out of the Navy in 1984, I went to Point Loma College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) for 4 quarters, to finish my BA. During this time I worked as a Control Board Operator and Newscaster for the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at KECR-FM, in El Cajon, CA (suburb of San Diego). KECR was one of the stations owned by the Family Radio Network.

The station had LOTS of volunteers for various things from a broad spectrum of Christians. Yet the owner and "powers" of Family Radio thought that some of their branches of Christianity to really be "of the devil." I can't remember which theological camp they were in, but I think it was Dallas Theological Seminary. I do know they were very rigid in their outlook.

I, on the other hand, talked to lots of people during the night shift (on the phone), and was NOT of the Family Radio mindset.

I remember being terrified back in 1975, because my close friend, a Jehovah's Witness, was convinced that the end was nigh ~ right then.

IF the Bible is correct, and IF our interpretations are correct, then ANY date mankind come up with is NOT the "end of the world." Because the Bible says that it will be like a "thief in the night." It says that it will be a surprise, and nobody will be expecting it.

Now, I must say that neither the "religious" end of the world nor the world being destroyed by aliens from outer space weighs on my mind as much as (1) climate change brought on by global warming; and (2) possible nuclear holocaust. And in both those cases, it may not mean the actual end of the "world," but rather the end of the human race.

Others of the world's inhabitants might not think (or feel, or instinctively sense) that such a bad thing.

People are so amazingly stupid it seems.

I remember a local "end of the world" group here in Dallas who did a mass suicide that night.

I guess it was indeed true - the world DID end. for them anyway.

I suppose believing that the world will end on May 11 is no different than believing that God sent his "son" to be a human for a while, then killed him, then brought him back, etc.

Your tag line is thought provoking. The first line is quite true, I think. And the 2nd line might provide a good topic: "How to Practice Safe Sects."

My only concern with such insanity is that they really stick to it, and if they are wrong, completely resign. Give all the money they received from donations back, for starters, and never preach anything ever again.

Of course this never happens.I would personally like to see on everyone's personal claim to knowledge of the end of the world a "what if we are wrong" clause.
