Anyone putting in any fall/winter crops? This is also a great time to plant fruit and nut trees.

My problem is finding trees at my nurseries this time of year. Also, digging in my rock hard ground. But i'd like to put in an apple tree, two pecans (you need one of each sex apparently), a grape vine, blackberry vine, and almond (or walnut) tree.

I recently put in some potatoes, and i want to also put in some radishes, carrots and winter squash. maybe pumpkins too.

I think i better hurry. :-)

We do not plant much here in Michigan at this time of year. But...I have put in leaf lettuce and spinach because they are cool weather crops. I really enjoy a spinach salad in October from my garden. I have a really good spinach salad recipe if your interested.

Right now I am drying herbs for winter. Some for us and some for the birds. I picked apples on Saturday and made a yummy apple pie. I am going to my sons to pick more apples for pies and applesauce. He has a wonderful pear tree too.

Ooo, tessboss, this is totally apple time! I so want to plant an apple tree this fall. I know of a place I can get apples from a tree up the highway a little.

I guess in Michagan you do get winter coming early, but you are right, you can get a nice quick fall crop from greens planted now. Radishes will grow quickly too, and you can also set up carrots, and then cover them with hay for the winter, then pick them out of the soil when there are thaws.

What is in your spinach salad?

My spinach salad is very tasty and many have asked for the recipe.

large bunch of spinach
water chestnuts
mandarin oranges (or fresh oranges chopped large)
almond slivers

dressing

1/3 cup sugar (or 1/3 cup agave nectar)
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1/2 cup evoo (extra virgin olive oil)
1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Mix all dressing together and toss with the rest..mmmm

I decided I have to, moneywise, put off finding apple and nut trees for now. But i did manage to plant these -

grape vine
sweet marjoram
greek oregano
prickly pear cactus
tomatoes
potatoes

And I got these seeds to put in this fall -
carrots
fennel
radishes
spinach

my winter garden is coming along nicely. I have garlic, onions, carrots, potatoes, many herbs which are hanging in there, and a few lettuces. I really should put in some radishes and kale or chard.

We missed our chance to put bulbs in the ground before Nov. Darn. Growing stuff here in WY is so tricky and you hardly get any growing time. Lived for years in the SF bay area and all you had to do was poke something in the dirt and it would take off and grow way into the winter months.

Tessboss, that saled sounds really good!
