My female parakeet has escaped from her cage twice today. She has never done that before. The male parakeet screaches at her when she does it. Why all of a sudden has she decided to escape? Any ideas? She pulls on the wires of her cage like she is trying to get them apart to get out.

why??? because she wants out and maybe away from the other bird...and if she can do it ...its a matter of time before he does also...time for a new cage maybe...and here is a thought also...if you have a male and female together she could be looking for a nesting spot ...and ready to lay eggs ...good luck there...

better have a avian vet on call and handy ...becuz if that is it...you will probably need one

i remember cappy trying to get out when i first brought him home...

its something you need to stop tho seriously..if you see how she is doing it find a way to stop it but im telling you she will go frantic as she knows she can get out now...im looking at she wants to lay an egg...if you have two cages you should have those birds separate anyway ...if not ...you should get another cage and keep them separate

how old are the birds you didnt say??

crazy

then they are both of breeding age for sure...and if you dont want breeding issues and have two different sexes should be separted not that this doesnt mean a female still cant become a chronic egg layer (very dangerous) but at least you wont have to worry about babies too smile

Tizzy, our female parakeet, has laid 2 eggs so far. We were ready with the nestbox. Thanks for your help.

Tizzy has laid 6 eggs total. There are no avian vets around my area but I talked with a man that for many years used to raise parakeets and many other types of birds. If I run into a problem at least I have him close by. My question is tonight I saw Tizzy has moved one egg off by the wall of the nest box and the other 5 are still together. Does she know that maybe that egg is infertile?

Dear Linda -

It's a shame that there are no avian vets near you. I know some areas seem to be completely without avian vets for some reason. You would think with so many pet owners having birds that avian vets would be in more abundance.

It's good that you have a resource you can talk to, to work on things.

Certainly sometimes parakeets are smart about their eggs and sometimes they are far less than smart. They can make decisions for all sorts of right and wrong reasons. I would err on the side of causing the least amount of stress to the mother and remaining eggs, and leave it the way she has left it. That way you are not interfering with her nesting area.

We would love to see some photos, is there any way to take a photo without using a flash or disturbing them in any way?
