Does anyone know where I can get a proper bird cage for a parakeet? Everything is too small or has a pagoda, or rounded top. I'm convinced that bird cages are designed by people who have never owned birds. Note: I currently have a cage connection part dome top style cage that is no longer made that needs to be replaced.

The ideal cage would be:

Flat top (essential - rounded tops or pagoda tops do not work well at all).
Draw bridge door (essential as parakeets, birds in general like this a lot).
Horizontal bars all the way around (for climbing).
1/2" or less bar spacing, prefer 3/8".
Size: 20-22" wide x 16-18" deep x 27-30" high.
This is the perfect size cage for a parakeet, as it gives them ample room for a good life. I have one female parakeet Sparky who is 9 years old, and she has been the joy of my life.

So, where can I get this cage style, does it exist? Or have it custom made for less than a rent payment? I was going to make her a cage, but it is very hard to find the correct materials that are parakeet safe, especially since they like to chew occasionally on the bars of the cage.

I really appreciate any help you could provide.

Have a great day!

Hi sparky,
The only cage I can think of with ALL horizontal bars is a Hagen Vision cage.
A few members here have them and can tell you more about them.

They don't have a slide out tray at the bottom for cleaning...the cage part detaches from the base for cleaning.
brb
http://www.petco.com/product/111152/Hagen-Vision-Bird-Cage-And-Stand-for-Canaries.aspx
Here is the hagen visions at petco. I know they also have them on ebay for a better price if you want to do a search.

I'm sure others will be around to let you know more about them.

It's very hard to find cages with ALL horizontal bars other than the Hagen.
My guys' cages does not have horizontal bars and they have no problem climbing it. And to make it even easier to climb I just attached ladders here and there on the inside. To be honest they don't use the ladders all that much..they just climb the bars.
I have a cage something like this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Level-Sugar-Glider-Cage-Large-Bird-small-animal-2483S-/230805462078?_trksid=m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D9047959832151631093&_qi=RTM1084481
The doors are not drawbridge type but I made them in to that type pretty easily. Mine came with 3 platforms but i only use one inside the cage. They LOVE having a good sized platform to play on, and throw foot toys off from inside. Also handy for little plates of veggies.

Here is another that others have and love.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Large-Wrought-Ir...=item3a74951dbb
Again...no horizontal bars and swing type doors.
But plenty of room and dimensions are great as far as length, width to height

If a cage does not come with platform/drawbridge type doors you can always buy platform/shelves that attach very easily in front of the door(s)

Luck with your cage hunt, and welcome to the forum smile

this cage fits ALL YOUR CRITERIA and its with free shipping...and the lowest price on ebay...for the record i bought mine from ebay as so many others have and none of us had a problem.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hagen-Medium-Vis...=item5d33ea71e4

it specifies its the DOUBLE being 34inches high verify that with the seller...however im not keen on this sellers ratings even tho they do a very high volumn of sales this next seller with basically the same rating has overall better feedback in the last several months but the cage is a tad more but with free ship also.

if so its the same cage many of us have which is the MO2 model

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hagen-Vision-Bir...=item3cbfe425a8

the cage above is the exact same cage in the picture here...and you can see alllll the room you have ...even tho its a lift off cage from the bottom...its very light weight easy to do and believe it or not the bird will stay put inside while you simply unlatch the grey latches front and back then lift cage to set it down on the floor while you clean the bottom..and NO seeds are kicked out with that clear seed guard.

purrrrrfect size for several perches and doors reverse inside for a drawbridge an there are FOUR double side by side doors on the front to do that ...with extremely slight modification most of us have made the doors to be drawbridge going outward instead of inward...very very simple clean up ...here is a picture of CAPPYS.

and this shows the slight modification to the double doors for a drawbridge ...they need NO modification for the same doors to open INWARD for drawbridge affect

i also bought from walmart kitchen area the flexable white plastic cutting boards trimmed them to fit and omg makes clean up a snap and you can use them over n over...again note the large picture and see the plastic cutting boards trimmed to cover the wire grate normally found on most cages but i dont like a wire grate for the birds feet and cleaning them can be a pain but with these very cheap flexable cutting boards....problem solved

I just knew you'd have a link or 2 for that cage up your sleeve illusive! lol Good deals too

I was just looking around amazon and they have them too, for around the same price w free shipping also.
This page http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&key...sl_69iplrq8h7_b has other hagens of various sizes, including the one shown above, to choose from and also other Hagen vision products if interested.

Like illusive, I don't like using the bottom grate either. It's a pain in the butt to clean and isn't great for their feet.
It's a known fact that it is good for them to be able to stretch their feet/toes and not have to have them curled around perches and cage wire allll the time.
Removing or covering the bottom grate is also more fun for them to play with foot toys smile
Those flexible plastic cutting boards are perfect..you might even find them at a dollar store like I do

ps
Be sure to check bar spacing if considering other size cages wink

giggle glad you do amazon for that sort of info as im strictly a ebay gal as you well know... laugh

but yes by all means be sure of spacing and for babies (young birds) ask me i know ...even 1/2 spacing maybe too big if you get a youngster like i did and when i brought him home, kept jamming his entire body thru the top ...both wings and all...wasnt fun...till he matured but even then id never risk that again as he could of easily broke a wing or two while i ran around the house panicky to find something to cover the top of the cage so he couldnt do that and eventually had to totally add stainless steel wire doing a basket weave sort of thing with it so he would stay put...

thank goodness that was the first and the last of any adventures he had... sick it was a really horrible experience watching him do that as id no sooner get him safely back jammed thru the wire both wings and all and in 30 seconds or less he would be doing it again...he earned the name "PIN HEAD" during that time....so id say even 1/2 inch spacing is too big for keets.

since then thru time he has added weight to a tune of 40grams and there is NO chance of that happening now...and that other cage..is now retired to a closet.

That lil pinhead sure IS a big boy now illusive. But as for it being the last of his adventures...ahem..i hope you knocked on wood over that one. That kid of yours is a late bloomer just starting to come in to his own and becoming more daring and adventuresome in his boundaries. I wouldn't discount the adventures just yet. smirk whistle

Again, happy cage hunting sparkyrun.
I'd get the biggest you can afford, while also thinking about maintenance.
We'd love to see pics of Sparky if you have any.
