I got two parakeets yesterday. One is 8 months old and one is 18 months old approx. They are not hand tamed at all and I would like to get them that way. I haven't opened the cage yet, Just let them adjust to being in a new house with new noises. Is it possible to hand tame them together, or should I put them in separate cages? I did attempt to put my hand in this morning and it did not go well, They seem to feed off each others nerves. I have also noticed one tends to peck at the other. any advice would be helpful.

It will definitely be easier to train them if you separate them.
Best if you had only gotten one at a time.
Give them at least a good week to let them settle and get used to their new surroundings and human family before you even attempt to touch or hand tame them. It's a lot for them to process when they are new to your home.
When the time comes to start training the first step will be to just slowly put your hand in cage and hold it very still maybe resting on a perch. Do not even try to get them to step up. They have to become comfortable with your hand just being in their home first.
Talk to them softly every chance you get and move very slowly. Tell them what you are doing when changing food/water and cleaning cage. Speak to them by name..if they have names yet?

Pics would be great if you can post them so that maybe we can help determine their genders? Or do you already have an idea whether males or females?

Congrats on your new friends and welcome to the forum smile

i always recommend the same...that being ...separation....in cages that simply can never be too big ...welllll almost never ...my point being of rather adequate size...problem is when we view cages they look large enough till then you add toys..ladders ...perches of various types....a swing...several food stations at different levels on an on...very quickly the bird cant be found and there simply isnt enough room for the bird to get sufficient excercise while in its home...remember birds by nature are very curious and active and they need to be...

these birds are of breeding age but should NOT breed as being of breeding age is not the same as being fully mature...so again ...separation is strongly recommended...

and...welcome to the forum smile

thanks for the tips. They are in a huge cage I just bought them today. I really only wanted one keet but they were listed in my local paper for 35 dollars with cage and everything. I think when they settle down some I will separate them. I know my white and blue is male (bright blue cere) and my yellow/green is a hard one, it's cere looks bark bluish brown so im not sure. this may sound silly but will they get lonely separated and in different rooms? Im a stay at home mom so someone is always here and it gets a tad noisy. I worry about it, i'd hate to be alone in a cage.

they should absolutely be separated untill sex is determined...THEN let them settle down...the longer together the worse it is later to separate...

birds are noisey it comes with anything for a pet unless a fish lol...in different rooms wont quiet them either...as they can hear each other anyway...might as well get use to the noise...even one can be noisey...but there noise is nothing like a dogs barking or a large parrot...or a baby crying...and it doesnt last long....especially once they get use to their surroundings...which can take some time.

lol I meant my dogs and other animals lol. My house is loud and i think it kinda scares the poor birdies. I did have slight success last night. The green and yellow one let me pick her up to move her to her new cage, the other bit me quite badly, but moved and separated.

ahhhhhhhhh very very good they are separated and they... IF things stick to a sort of consensus ...the green an yellow one is male where it didnt bite you hard maybe tasted you a bit but the other one where that one bit you badly id venture thats a female as they are .. or can be known as BIG biters lol...because they defend the young more in the wild so they are a bit more fiesty...

actually birds kinda of like noise as long as its not a SUDDEN loud noise when things are quite they get nervous because again in the wild silence means danger...thats why birds like to make a lot of noise when a tv or radio is on...and toys that are noisey...that they can bang on cage bars or have bells ... laugh
