My hen recently had 4 babies. The oldest one is no more than a month and one week old but two of the babies have been going out of the nest box on their own to explore. The oldest has been learning to eat seed on its own too but still begs for food. When the father budgie sees the oldest one out of the box begging for food he tries to put his foot on his baby like he is trying to mount it. The father wont feed his oldest baby either unless the baby is in its nest box. I am confused because the mama is still around and he rather harass his poor little baby. I stop whenever I see him trying to do it because its sick and I can't stand to see it. I don't know what to do;should I separate the father from the babies and mama?. He still feeds the mama budgie and the other babies. I don't' know why he is doing that. Is this normal?

well im not sure if this is what id call normal and i would separate daddy from the rest...just make sure there is plenty of loose seed spread out on the floor of the cage and food cups also kept filled near the bottom of the cage...of course with food on the floor you will need to clean more...till you graduate them to putting seed in a shallow clear low sided dish on the bottom... smile

mama can and will take care of them...of course it is going to mean a lot more work for her but she will and its better than the undesirable trait being displayed by daddy at this time...they are all just about ready to fledge from what you say anyway so its ok...just be sure mama is given a little extra GOOD FOOD and calcium and protein to her diet for awhile...the babies will and should get this also...

get some ABBA EGG FOOD...(PETAMINE IS NO LONGER BEING SOLD in small quantity AND WILL GO ENTIRELY OFF THE MARKET SOON) and feed this for only a few months to mama and babies ...babies should have some till about 6 months of age...then dont feed it any longer to any of them as its very high in protein which in general is not good for birds HOWEVER that being said...they all need it right now for awhile...

here is a website for abba egg food they sell different sizes and the 3lb will be PLENTY..offer it in a couple of different food cups...not with seed mixed into it...this should be a preferred food for all of them right now.
