Summer has just started here and afternoons are pretty miserable, inside and out. We don't have any sort of AC. I'm doing my best with window fans at night and closing things up during the day, but it only lasts so long.

How can I help keep my parakeets cool?

Go to Home Depot and get a 5000 btu GE window AC unit for $99 if you can afford it. We used that in our last house and it cooled the whole house pretty good. We closed a few unused rooms and it worked to keep us cool all summer long. Just make sure you do not put the birds where the AC blows directly on them.

If you cannot afford it then mist the birds regularly and if they like baths, put a bath in the cage for them to use. Also make sure they have plenty of cool water to drink.

how hot is hot in your house...i do the same at nite i open doors and windows then close it up during the day with curtains drawn and dont run much for lights or oven during the day either as they throw off a lot of heat...but i do run a lot of fans and just not directly blowing on the bird ... smile
