Hello all! I am new to this forum and joined this forum mainly to see if anyone can answer some questions that I have about my parakeets that I just want to know mainly out of curiosity, as well as to have a site to go to where I can ask experts for help and advice on taking care of my parakeets in case I should ever need it.
But anyway, moving on to the very questions that I had for all of you. And again, these are questions that I just want answered mainly for the sake of my own curiosity.
Just so you all know, there are two different parts to this question, and I will be talking about four different parakeets in total.
I will begin by talking about the first two parakeets. So, a few months ago, I bought these two parakeets that me and the girl at the pet-store both guesstimated were boy and girl, with our very little bit of knowledge about sexing parakeets (based on the colors of their ceres). But I don't think that the girl and I did too bad because I really do think that they are boy and girl, and that we were even right about which one was the boy and which one was the girl. I have since named them Samson and Delilah lol.
But even though I'm pretty sure that I am right, I guess I just wanted to ask you guys to see if there were any experts that could confirm my assumptions or tell me otherwise.
So, my parakeet Samson started out with kind of a medium-dark pinkish-purple cere, and as the months have gone by, it has darkened a bit and is now turning to more of a dark blue-ish purple. And I am told that these are common colors/color-changes to see among males. Samson is also very vocal and chatty, and he is more playful with his toys and more of a show off and more of a little acrobat lol. I am also told that these are common characteristics among male parakeets.
Moving on to Delilah. Delilah started out with a light, almost white-ish blue cere, with more white surrounding the top of her cere around her nostrils and more blue at the bottom of her cere. Now, the top part of her cere around her nostrils, which was once white is now turning to a more tan color (but the light, white-ish blue at the bottom is still more or less the same in color and shade). I'm told that tan and white colors are common for young females, and I will occasionally here that females can sometimes have a hint of light blue (but no one really seems to have the same opinion on the blue part). Delilah is also more reserved than Samson, and usually more quiet, and not always quite as playful and show-off-y lol, which I am told is common for females.
So, my question with that first part is: Am I correct about Samson and Delilah being boy and girl (with the one named Samson actually being the boy and the one named Delilah actually being the girl)?
On to the next part, involving the other two parakeets. I just bought two more parakeets a few days ago (not that anything happened to Samson and Delilah or that anything is wrong with them, so no worries lol. I just decided to buy them a new friend lol). I bought these two new ones because they were "fancy" or "rare" parakeets and they were so pretty!! One of them is this beautiful neon green and yellow with no black patterning, and the other has the neon yellow as well with the dark black patterning and it makes the coolest looking contrast! But I'm only keeping one of them, because the other one is for a friend for her birthday! But they were just so pretty I had to get one for myself lol!
But anyway, moving on to the actual questions about these two new ones. Both of their ceres are very pink and look like they could be changing to a purple-blue color (with one of them having a cere that is already more blue-purple than the other one's cere). I haven't had them long enough to study their behavior, but simply based on the color of their ceres, I am guessing they are both boys. Unless there is a chance that the one with more pink than blue/purple in its cere could possibly be female, which I thought I had heard could be possible before (but of course, I could be wrong or could have misheard something).
Anyway, all comments and opinions are welcome! I'm just curious to know lol!
