I suspect Tom Hanks will
define this Ludlum character. There's not much for him to mess up, anyway. I saw Tom Hanks play a moron, an AIDs suffering lawyer, and an astronaut in the space of just a few years, and did brilliantly in all three roles. If he can pull that off, he can make something of Robert Ludlum.
I didn't read "Angels and Devils (Demons?)" or whatever the name of his first adventure was, but from "The DaVinci Code" there's just not much to the guy. Doesn't do a whole lot, and there's not much defining his character except to reel off kook theories regarding 'The Lost Feminine' at appropriate intervals.
I think Sophie played by a younger actress is a great idea, especially if Hollywood wants to make money on this. I wouldn't think they'd want to make this into a total chick-flick and I assume they actually wanna make the most money they can on it. I mean, they're gonna want
men to go to this movie too, right? By and large men find younger females more attractive. Might not be right, might not be fair, but that's simply the way it is. Put a hot young babe in it and men just might show up. It's worked before--how on earth do you think humanity survived the Stone Age?
Also it's nice to see a French character actually played by someone French. Anglos just can't do the language as well as a native, and an American (especially) doing a French 'accent' can be fingernails on the chalkboard.
I was most impressed with the casting of Sir Ian McKellen. Forget the silly description Brown gives, McKellen could bring that character to
life. He can make that character as authoritative as he should be, and provide the necessary elements to make him something of a sympathetic character.
I think Paul Bettany could play the crazed Albino, he was excellent in "Master and Commander" and I don't worry about him pulling it off. I dunno much about this Jean Reno, haven't seen him much, but at least he can make French sound like French I imagine.
Looks like good casting to me, indicative they're gonna give it the full treatment and make a good movie out of it.
