Who do you mean by 'you'? And why do you say anything about being 'influenced by Gnosticism'? The DVC book is influenced by these ideas.
Gnosticism is as worthy of study as anything else that is relevant.
Do you realize that some people believe Gnosticism to be occult in practice? They had some very unorthodox sexual practices that many would find deplorable.
Well, that could explain some of Dan Brown's ideas. People do tend to criticise the beliefs of others. And genuine criticisms can be made. Much of Christianity's past was steeped in cruelty.
They were an early offshoot of the Christian church and came up with added "Bible" books of their own much like the Latter Day Saints and Jehovah Witnesses have in more recent history. The LDS and Jehovah Witnesses have also "added" their own books. I see the Gnostics much in the same vein.
added "Bible" books I don't think that sounds correct. Perhaps you could check out when the Bible was actually produced. It was not a product of the very early Christian church. The 'gnostics' may even have been the early Christians.

Stop for a second and think about that: the New Testament was compiled by whom? The authors of each book did not know they were writing the New Testament. The books you see today were pulled together by a committee. Who was on that committee? What were their credentials as men of God?
And most of all, why would we trust them when it is well documented that the early church was not a natural extention of the teachings of Christ, but rather a violent socio-political movement that involved much "purging". These facts are documented at least as well as the life of Christ itself.
I'm not saying you should believe me or any particular thing. I'm certainly not saying that the Gnostics or Dan Brown have the key to truth. What I am saying is that most people believe in the Bible with no knowledge of where it really comes from. My only advice is to question what you have been told.
Cheers.
Hi localman. Yes, I agree, these matters really do need to be considered; not simply ignored.
I'd be interested to know more about the records of the 'violent socio-political movement that involved much "purging". '

There is no way you could say that Christianity is a compilation of many different religions....and Christianity does not have a hard time defining what it is.

Ummmmmmmmm.........
Squeekychimp - i do not want to start again............ Christianity has borrowed ideas from various pre & co existing religions - though I agree it is not a compilation.

somsuj, the viewpoint can be problematic, due to the differences between Protestantism and Catholisism. Protestantism has rejected many practises accepted in Catholisism, and some things are realised to be borrowed, e.g the date of Christmas, etc. Broad statements is thus problematic, and maybe either the point should be avoided, or specifics addressed.

Lat, broadstatements are indeed problematic and holds true for EVERY religion be it Hinduism, Islam and Gnosticism.
However I do not understand what is the problem with the broad statment that Christianity has borrowed ideas from various pre & co existing religions . Problem with that almost equals saying that Christianity did not borrow any ideas - it is unique.
Now I am not a theologian who can provide detail discussion; then none of us are. Are we ?
