What are your favorite Japanese movies? Here are some of mine -

* Ran
This is a long, slow movie but has gorgeous cinematography and story telling. It's the kind of movie to sit down with a plate of cheese, a glass of wine, and enjoy.

* Seven Samurai
Great personalities and situations, a lot of fast paced action too.

* Yojimbo
Classic black humor that set the stage for a sequel and several westerns, it's the drifter who comes into town and cleans it up.

I'm a big fan of Kurasawa. I like is early work and his "dreams." I find the latter very entertaining

I'll have to watch Dreams again - I have it on DVD but haven't seen it in a long time. I'm more a fan of the samurai epic, and could watch the period pieces all day smile

The Seven Samurai of course, and other samurai movies by Kurosawa. But even his "To Live" (in japanese "Ikiru") is a masterpiece.

Then there is Kon Ichikawas "Fires on the Plain" ("Nobi"), which is the most cruel film about war I have ever seen. It shows war's most horrible atrocities, without any hint of heroism. I really recommend it, but it is hard stuff.

"The Sea and Poison" ("Umi to dokuyaku") by Kei Kumai is a black and white WWII film as well and haunted me a long time after I had seen it.

"Eureka" by Shinji Aoyama is quite good as well.

All the films above are actually black and white, and I must confess that I really enjoy seeing "colourless" films. Amoung the best japanese films in colour is
"After Life" ("Wandafuru raifu") by Hirokazu Koreeda

Last not least I liked "Spirited Away", animated film at it's best without Disney's usual syrupy sweetness and best of all: No singing! And a girl in the leading part.

I like japanese film very much, with one exception (which probably will shock you): Kurosawas "Dreams", the only film ever where I left the cinema before the end. I thought it incredebly boring, which still surprises me, because I otherwise adore Kurosawa. But it's quite long ago I saw the film, and I will give it a new chance, nex time I have the opportunity to see it.

My son is very into anime so we saw Spirited Away as well as Princess Mononoke and many others. They definitely have a lot of charm.

I haven't watched much Japanese film but I like some anime (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke). I'd suggest also Millennium Actress. It won grand prize at the 'Japan Agency of Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival'.

My son runs the anime site at bellaonline.com so we watch a ton of anime. Trigun was a good series. Metropolis was good. The Animatrix series was also good ...

Yeah, I like anime also. I think Trigun and Inuyasha are both good series. Do you watch them in Adult Swim in Cartoonetwork?

Rurouni kenshin is an awesome anime series, its all about feudal japan!! and yes i do watch adultswim, but there are a couple of old samurai movies that arent so bad, like Zatoichi challenged, i think it was called, it was a great movie, but i havent seen all of it i seen it from the middle, and theres Zatoichi the blind swordsman, i didnt like it as much as Zatoichi challenged, but it was decent, i didnt see it from the begining either.

My daughter loves Anime and is an excellent artist of it also, most of it on her website. I have to admit I've watched many a movie with her and enjoy them. I can't tell you all the names but she has a library of about 50 movies.

Spirited Away was a favourite of mine, I've watched that several times with her.
