I suppose one person's flirting could be another's harrassment.
One may be friendly, pleasant and perhaps welcome.
The other may be frightening, overbearing and definitely unwanted.
I think most people can tell the difference. If they can't, then that's worrying.

A few years ago - 1997 I think - Birmingham wasn't allowed to celebrate 'Christmas', it had to be the more politically correct 'Winterval'!!

It caused a lot of upset and the council soon learned that this was a mistake. Christmas came back.

Now, as Britain is planning its seasonal festivities, Lambeth Council has decided to outlaw Christmas lights. They can be called 'Winter' lights or 'Celebration' lights. Apparently they don't want to upset Moslems and other non-Christians. I think this is ludicrous. The Moslems I know are perfectly happy about Christmas.

Apparently, Lambeth Council says that the Midwinter season is not just about Christmas, but also about the celebrations of other religions, so this diversity has to be acknowledged.

What do you think?

From geocities.com:
Communist Manifesto on Religion
Communist Manifesto on Religion Marx’s most famous quote is not about his hatred of capitalism, but about his hatred of religion. “Religion is the opiate of the people,” he said, equating religion with the most addictive and deadly drugs of his time. Marx wanted religion abolished, and he made forced atheism a formal part of communism. Some experts argue that all people have an inherent need for spirituality, and without the option of religion, they may become desperate for a belief in something greater than themselves. Communism has rejected religion, but has still tried to tap into the human need for spirituality. In a way, they have created a new religion called Deification of the State. Infamous communists like Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong used this new kind of religion to make people believe they were virtual gods. The people of their countries were encourage (or forced, in some cases) to worship them. Ironically, by rejecting religion, communism has become a kind of theocracy. Americans are very happy to have the First Amendment as part of our constitution. Freedom of Religion, not governed by the state. Outlawing anything based on a religion smacks of a precursor to Communism to me! To outlaw a practice of a religious party because it offends others is the ultimate worst case senario of PC!

But it's not trying to outlaw religion; only Christmas. The whole idea - as far as they are concerned - is that they don't want to upset religious people who are not Christian (not that I think Christmas does).

And where does it end? Maybe things the Muslims do offend Jews, Christians, Buddhists, etc. If you outlaw one custom of a certain religious party why not do them all? Isn't that only fair? Whose religion is more important to the eyes of the governing people of that city? Muslims?

There is ALWAYS trouble when the government tries to intervene in the practices of religious sects.

I think they will soon have to realise that they have made a mistake.

Yes, I think so too PDM. Or else citizens will move to America like so many others have, to practice religious freedom.
