I have a 2 year old parakeet which is a male,yesterday I noticed that he could not bear any weight on his left foot,and every time he tryed to perch he would lose balance and fall also he could not climb , so I took him out of the cage because I also have a female in with him,and put him in a box with bedding this morning I noticed that the foot that is hurt,his two front toes have curled completley backwards and the thumb toe is completely sideways, and when he trys to stand or walk the whole foot goes under.PLEASE RESPOND WITH ANSWERS FOR ME HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Oh no Lynn I'm not really sure what you can do for him yourself. He really needs to be seen by an Avian vet as soon as possible. The sooner the better. If you wait to long the vet may not be able to fix his foot. And he must be in a lot of pain so maybe they will give him pain meds. It sounds like he broke his toes somehow. Poor baby
Do you have an Avian vet that you go to? Reg vets usually don't know enough about birds to be able to help/treat them. Look in the yellow pages under Avian or Exotics vets or call your nearest regular vet and they should be able to tell you where your closest Avian vet is located.
Why do these things always seem to happen on the weekend or after hours?! Geesh!

Has he been getting sufficient calicium???

i would call the vet. i would either move all his perches really low or make a new home for him. if he cant go on a perch, put him in a 3 gallon critter keeper. i would also add soft, confratble items like fleece in there to help him out if it gets that bad.

AND get CALCIUM into his diet..a lot of times what ur describing is CALCIUM DEFICIENCY

Do your guys have cuttlebone in their cage? That is a good source of calcium. You can also get powered calcium to sprinkle on their food. Another source of calacium would be ground egg shell. You can boil them an egg then finely chop the whole egg, including the shell.

Will you be able to take him to a vet?

Does anyone think it could be that his nails need clipped? They will curl back and begin to grow into skin if they're not clipped. I'm sure yall all know that; but what do you think?

Very well could be. Especially it seems to have happened quite quickly. Lynn did you check his feet and talons to make sure the look like they are supposed to.

illusive - it is supprising how often that happens. It would be nice to know the outcome, even if it is not good. We all care here and would like to know.
