My wife and I rescued a budgie from the street four weeks ago. Since we were unable to locate the owner, we decided to keep him, and got a cage and stocked it with toys. At first he just sat on the perch and didn't move, but recently he's a little more lively, although he still ignores the toys. Nevertheless, he refuses to come out of the cage. We make sure the room is safe and well-lit, then open the door, only to watch him sit on the perch. We've waited up to an hour, but he doesn't make the slightest move to come out and fly around. I'm not that interested in hand-training him, but I would like to give him the opportunity to fly. Any suggestions?

It is going to take time to hand train a parakeet - and you really need him hand-trained before he leaves the cage for safety reasons. You always need to be able to reliably get him back into his cage in emergencies.

Take it day by day. You'll get there!
