Home Merlot Vine Photos
June 1999

The Cape Cod Winery was nice enough in March 1999 to give me three cuttings of merlot when we visited them during their spring pruning. These had the bare stubs of buds on them, and I named them C1 through C3 after the winery. We brought them home, made up a pot for each with a sand-soil mixture, and planted them.

They hadn't started growing when we were out in that area in June for the Nantucket Wine Festival. We were on the motorcycle, and we swung by the winery on our way home from that, so they gave me two more. I called those M1 and M2. This time, I had to tuck them into the motorcycle jacket and be cautious as we rode the motorcycle home.

Sadly, we lost M2 in June to squirrel munching. There is also another of the original three (C2) that has not started to bloom yet. That leaves us with two of the originals blooming, plus one motorcycle vine that was given to us with leaves that is further growing.
