The Frugal Gourmet: Wine & Dessert
Author: Jeff Smith The Frugal Gourmet is always fun to watch, and in this video he takes on the challenge of doing his dishes in time while explaining about wine and dessert! He pulls it off in style, but don't look for any earth shattering wine information! First, he begins with easy dishes. He makes a syrup of port, and dips some pears into it. Dish one done. Next, he takes standard vanilla instant pudding, uses port in it, and suddenly two dishes are done. The third dish uses whipped eggs, marsala and sugar. He zips right through this, because now he wants to talk to us about Sauternes. Sauternes are sweet white wines from France, where the grape has been affected by "noble rot". He takes you on a video visit with these grapes, so you can see how black and nasty they look. They make some excellent wine though! This is the interesting part. Ignore other digressions about the "spirit of the wine" and "classic merlots from California". He eventually returns to port and chocolate, something he claims is "very in at the moment" but actually is a quite classic pairing. This can be served after coffee. Jeff ends the night with Beaujolais, cheese, and bread - not really a dessert in the traditional sense, but a fine snack to chat over at any time of the day! Cheese tends to enhance wine, and the bread goes well also. A fun video to get some dessert tips from, and neat to watch if you want to learn a little about Sauternes!
