 Basics of Historic Sangria Recipes
Sangria as a concept has been around since the days of fruit and wine. Back in the old days, buyers did not buy a "bottle of wine" at a local wine shop. The reason is that wine bottles were not made in standard shapes back then. The technology did not exist. If you bought a hand-made bottle, how could you know for sure it really did hold 750ml of liquid in it? So, just like in modern times when you buy meat, you would go to a winery or other shop. You would bring your own container and they would measure out the amount you wanted from a large barrel. That way you could see right in front of you how much was being measured.
The wealthy didn't bother with the middle man. They simply bought entire barrels to "lay down" in their cellars, and servants would draw out enough wine for the day into a lovely crystal decanter. It was nice to be rich!
The poor had a different technique. They simply made their own wine! Many of my relatives have created quite delicious wines out of peaches, plums, and whatever else was handy. The instructions for making your own wine are really very simple and this practice was exceedingly common in most villages. Since the poor already had fruit growing in the bushes, and wine fermenting in their back room, they were all set to combine the two together for some sangria!
So the key is to remember that sangria is a drink that has been enjoyed for centuries. It is not something elaborate that must have Item 1 and Item 2 to work properly. Sangria is about fun, friends, delicious fruit, tasty wine, and enjoying life.
