My father has some old wines stored but I don't have the information of the wines on hand but I know they've been stored for years, and i was just wondering if they would still be safe to drink or if they should have been stored in a special way. I believe they are red wines but if you need more info to know exactly I will post it later. HELP! THanks! I'm new to wines but I really enjoy them!

Hi.

The only way to tell if they are drinkable is to open one and see.

Pour a glass, smell the wine. If it smells OK try a mouthfull.

Old wines lose their fruity flavours, and although the wine may entrance an enthusiast, many people do not like the taste of old wine.

It is also a commonly held misconception that all red wines age (not all do) and become valuable (few do so)

However, your nose and tongue are the best -- indeed the only -- indicators of whether you'll enjoy drinking them.

But they will not harm you.

They could be vinegar - they could be great! Have a party, open them up and see \:\) If they're bad, that's fine, at least you found out!

I heard white wine is at it's peak within the first 3 to 5 years. Anyone hear this before?

There's no set rule for white wine. Many white wines in modern times are meant to drink in 6 months and go downhill quickly after that. Other famous Chablis are meant to drink after MUCH more than 5 years. So it all depends on what you get \:\)
