I'm making a corned beef and cabbage dinner (often known as a "New England Boiled dinner") and am a loss as to what wine to serve. My mother made the meal when I was a kid, but they never drank wine with it. Thanks.

Hi Corned beef and cabbage ~ I think we used to have something like that when I was little. I can't imagine drinking wine with it though. Perhaps, as it's beef, something red, but a rich red wine and corned beef just don't sound right to me. Welcome to the forum, Susanvw!

It's going to be interesting to see what the wine experts say on this one! I love corned beef and cabbage, but I'm low-brow enough that I'd probably have a beer with it.

Good research, but more fun to talk about it, IMO. No offense intended, PDM.

I needed to check it out, because the corned beef we have here wouldn't go with wine, so I thought that it might be different. I also thought that this might be a dish with Irish roots, so I wanted to find that out too. I have found a page, saying that UK and US corned beef are, indeed, the same: The thing is, ours tends to come in tins! This is what we get: http://www.britishfooddirect.com/images/44-137-fb-cornedBeef340.jpgA corned beef recipe ~ hash: http://www.4ormore.co.uk/images/cbh.jpgThis is what you get: http://www.britishcornershop.co.uk/images/large/TJ0510.jpgCorned Beef & Cabbage http://beerinfood.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/corned-beef.jpghttp://www.tastyisland.net/images/mcmackin_corned_beef_pot700.jpghttp://www.mccormick.com/assets/225_1415_cornedBeef.jpghttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2181/2341507821_1a30486e18.jpg?v=0My aunt, though, makes absolutely delicious corned beef pasty. Since I've stopped eating beef, and wheat disagrees with me, I shouldn't eat it, but I'm guessing that, next time I visit, I might just give in.

So the local wine aficianados, desperate for some new exchange, pounce. Been a long time since a post here (in wines) saw this kind of action.
For me, stout doesn't work at all with CB&C. A nice lager or ale yes, stout and porter, no.
I like a nice dry but fruity Riesling with CB&C. I think the apple which so often shows with this wine is a nice complement. Maybe even a Kabinet Riesling.
from elsewhere in the world and in profile, perhaps an off-dry Chenin Blanc from Vouvray. Not sweet, I don't think, just off-dry. Ask at your retailer; make sure they know and are not passing 'hearsay'. Not US, not South Africa.
Just to mix things up, what about a sparkling Blanc de Noir?
"Crisp" should be our watchword for a wine to go with this dish.

Actually, I keep hearing that certain beers are no longer considered lowbrow, but that could just be happy propaganda from my brother-in-law who runs a brewery (braumeister?)! Brom has motivated me to find a Blanc de Noir; oxymoronic beverages sound interesting!
