Rhode Island Wine Shipping Laws

Rhode Island is a tiny state - but even so, it boasts four wineries! In fact, Sakonnet Winery is located in Rhode Island and is the largest winery in all of New England.

Rhode Island once allowed limited shipment of wine to individuals for personal use.

Unfortunately, in July 2001 the law was changed so that people ordering wine had to be physically AT the winery when they placed the order. This makes it exceedingly challenging for ordering wine from out of state!

Interestingly if you go to a Rhode Island winery's website, like Sakonnet, they say right there that they can't ship to Rhode Island buyers. So they can't even ship in-state!

The overseer of this area is the Dept. of Business Regulation, Office of Liquor Enforcement / Compliance

Let me know if you have any fresh information about Rhode Island wine shipping laws! If you have recently had wine shipped in to you here, please let me know how smoothly the experience went. Often the laws say one thing, but FedEx and UPS say another!
