I second that! especially with iodine in cuttlebones and mineral blocks, I would check with a vet first!

Personally i have an iodine block tied to the cage like her cuttle bone and mineral block, she rarely goes to the iodine so she must not need much the cuttle bone is her second and the mineral block has got some good use.

My bad!
I guess I just assumed people would check with a vet first. It didn't even cross my mind to mention that! lol
So, thanks for mentioning it.
The iodine was recommended first by my avian vet for the finches. They just didn't seem very healthy so they went to the vet in January. The vet recommended that the finches get the iodine supplement.
At a later time, I called the vet and asked about the parakeets. They said it would be ok but to not give as much as the finches get. The finches actually get it 2 times a week while the parakeets get it 2-3 times per month.

This is all very interesting and now I am more and more confused!! So many thoughts. Well, I am thinking about taking Caico to the vet just to see if he has any suggestions of ways I can help my little pigeon toed friend. I think I'll ask about all of this too when I do.

no the block is more than likely ok ... i am speaking of specifically water supplements. you should never add anything to the water enless instructed to. (rarely is it beneficial)

Absolutely! I use Avi-X Bird Builder because my avian vet recommends it -- she's enthusiastic about Harrison's products in general.

I think Jasper's Mom made an excellent point about over-doing it, with vitamins & minerals...

The organic iodine supplement that was recommended to me is basically purified water and kelp.
I wonder if I could just feed them kelp 2-3 times per month?
I don't eat anything from the ocean (it all taste, well, fishy!) so I have no idea if kelp is even available for humans to eat.
And what about seaweed. I know that is available. I think that also has the natural iodine versus the fake stuff that is used in iodized salt.
I could chop it up in the carrots and hopefully they won't notice!

If you feel uncomfortable about supplementing your budgies via their water supply the you could feed them iodine rich foods twice a week. For instance cranberries have high amounts of iodine and are safe for budgies. Most budgies are deficient in Iodine and so you really do need to add it to their diet.
