I already have two budgies and i have the room, money and plenty of attention for another bird. The cage deminsions are 20 by 20 by 20 in. The cage spacing is 1/2 in. Could i put a canary in the cage? Since i have 2 budgies already, i would think they would bond together rather than with me. Yet i think budgies are cuter and can be hand trained.

Hello--

Thanks for asking first before you added a canary to the flock.

No, you should not add a canary or any other breed into the parakeet flock. They wouldn't get along and might harm each other. If you want a canary, you should buy a cage just for that bird.

Also, I'd recommend getting a larger cage for your two parakeets. Your current dimensions are barely big enough for one parakeet let alone two. Sometimes you can find reasonaly priced cages online at E-Bay or Petsmart, Petco, Dr. Foster, etc.

Finally, training two birds at once is much harder than training just one. They tend to bond with each other and not you. You may have to train them separately.

This site has loads of information on all the above topics.

Good luck.

Since you have some extra $ I'd buy a new cage. Your birds would be much happier and more entertaining to watch!

many budgie owners of only one bird have a bigger cage than that...i agree with the others ...if you have the money where you have two keets you definetly need a bigger cage for sure...one longer in length as budgies fly more horizontal than up..so its best to find a cage that is more like whats called a flight cage longer in length in otherwords...than height. Then dont over crowd it with stuff inside so the birds cant use the extra space to fly...which is a big mistake a lot do an defeat the entire reasoning behind getting a bigger cage....

Buy a cage not a Canary...and ...absolutely do not house them together.

im sorry i confused you all. Those were the cage deminsions for the empty cage. My parakeets have at least double the size of that cage. ( i dont have the numbers right now since im at a hotel).

I was going to housed them in different cages too. But are there any other birds that can live in the empty cage.( i know choices are limited)

Im not familar with the bar spacing which would be ok for finches...1/2 or 3/8 is good for budgies.

I've reread the entire thread again and I think what peepers is asking is: Would a 20x20x20 cage with ½" bar spacing be adequate for a canary? I don't think she was advocating putting a canary in with her budgies, I think she is talking about a second cage. If I am interpreting the question properly, my answer would be that the second cage sounds adequate for a canary. Unlike budgies, they do not need the extra room for stretching their wings.

your right Kymber, i was trying to say that but the words came put very confusing. I would never share a cage with canaries and budgies.

But should i get a canary or a budgie. I am just concerned that Peepers and Johnny are not going to be the same when they got there own flock. I am going to research and i might just buy another cage for the future bird if it can't go in that one

Just curious as to why a canary would not need the extra space to stretch his wings. Do they just jump around?
