I had 2 baby parakeets, about 4 months old. One of them passed away 2 days ago & my other one seems sad. He just sits in his cage unresponsive. Should I get him a new friend?? I don't know much about parakeets, please help!

hi avvvva and welcome...many folks think one bird needs another companion to be happy...this more often than not ends up being more of a problem than not ...for various reasons...there is no guarantee that getting another bird they will both like each other as well...sometimes again..a lot of times bullying will happen or one will just intimidate the other into a sort of submission and then it really is miserable...

give this bird some time as you said its only been a couple days and it will wonder where its friend went...but will adjust to being alone nicely and with some toys be very content by itself and its toys...

and with you interacting with it in a gentle way and not overly being by its side all the time, this will happen soon enough if you make the attempt to also play with his toys with him a bit...how old is the remaining bird ???

do you have any idea why the other one passed away???? Im so sorry you lost one...and id watch the other close to make sure it doesnt seem sick... smile...a good indication is puffiness of feathers and abnormal poops...not well shaped or very watery or dark in color other than green or med dark green with the white center and round...

Hi Avvvva, welcome to the forum.
So sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose a pet, and to lose one so very young id an awful thing.
Please keep an eye on the one you have left for the signs of illness illusive mentioned above. Your other baby may have been exposed to something contagious.

I do believe that birds go through a grieving period when they lose a friend, just like we people do. He will miss his friend for a while. But that does not mean you have to get him a replacement.
In fact, if you don;t get him another friend to bond with right away he will be MUCH more apt to bond with you. He will see you and your family as his flockmates.
Just spend more time with him. Talk to him lots and lots. If he's not hand tamed yet, take it slow. Be patient, move very slowly around him'
You might even eat in front of him and try giving him something to eat at the same time. Birds do tend to eat as a flock so maybe he will like eating with you.
Not that he won't eat alone, he WILL. Rest assured he will eat on his own. he might be sad for a little while but with a little extra TLC he'll come around.

What are your birds names? The one that passed and the one you still have?
Got pics?? We looove pics smile

ps
if you want your bird to bond with you, remove all mirrors from his cage if there are any in there. With mirrors he will bond to the birdy image in the mirror instead of you wink

hi again...one more question ...are his food cups high or low to the bottom of the cage...???? you should have several different ones to put food in some higher some lower because when so young they dont feel too comfortable going to bottom of the cage even tho thats where they first learn to eat when fledging...also have the cups placed at the very end of a perch so the bird can reach it comfortably enough to just lean over and eat from them...

one more thing that some folks dont realize ...is if you over fill a cup with food ...the hulls are left on top of the viable seed the bird will eat and if they see only hulls they think the cup is empty....so what to do about that is only fill the cups with 1 1/2 TBS of food and after a day just stir it up some with your finger then at the end of two days dump it and refill...if you only have one food cup tho this will need to be done more often as the bird only has that one cup to feed from. Some folks blow out the hulls but any time ive done that the dang hulls fly back into my face an also some good seed is blown out at the same time making more waste. smile

you absolutely do not need to get another bird and in reality to be honest you should not get another bird...and ive explained why to you in a post...this could cause more serious issues than anything and this bird WILL get back to normal

just be patient !!!! smile

the other thing too avvvva that your not knowing is IF you should get another bird which i hope you listen to the advice being given here by others too...you would need ANOTHER CAGE to quarantine it for 90days as you dont know if these birds are carrying any sort of hidden diseases at this time and one can infect the other.

you just need to WAIT and be PATIENT.

Stanley will be just fine without your getting him a friend.
YOU are his friend and flockmate. They do just fine being a single bird as long as they get attention from their humans.

Besides, like illusive pointed out...there is never a guarantee that Stanley would even LIKE a new one of you got one. Sometimes they just plain do not get along.
AND you would need another cage to quarantine the new one.

Just be patient. Stanley will come around and be just fine. Work with him slowly EVERY day, build up his trust in you. You'll see that if you take the time and be patient..working at HIS pace, never forcing yourself upon him, he will be a very happy and well adjusted little bird.

gain, sorry for your loss. I did see in your other thread what happened to Rhonda..so disregard what I said about the one you lost maybe having been contagious. frown

what you call itching maybe he is coming into a molt...and actually preening....and during this time as it gets worse they get grumpy a bit...and you will start to see a lot of little fluffy feathers all over ... laugh

well misting or baths will also help but if he is about 7-8 months old this could very well be it or older and going thru a new molt...

no if its molt its not the same as whats called feather plucking where they pick allll their feathers and do so in such a way you see bald areas and redness....

they generally have two types of molt a minor molt where its all the lil fluffies and a major molt where virtually they drop every feather on their body a bit at a time starting at the head and neck area then progressing all the way to the tail where they end up looking like they got a little stumpy butt as we call it in here ...where the tail feathers are there but just very short till they lengthen out. smile
